In October, my family attended NEHA’s Hispanic Heritage Month Conference in Providence, RI for our first time.
As soon as we arrived on Friday, we received a warm welcome and the hotel was excellent. When programming began on Saturday, we enjoyed every activity, but I especially learned a lot about how to be prepared for an emergency. My children really enjoyed the activities planned for them, especially the arts and crafts activities where they made their own costumes and then had a costume party.
On Saturday night after dinner, we took part in a family dance party where we danced together to some great Spanish music. Personally, my favorite activity of the weekend was the family Karate class. It was full of adrenaline and the instructor was very professional and fun, and he has hemophilia, too! We learned self-defense techniques and even ended by breaking real wooden boards.
Having an event conducted in our language is something I value a lot. I had never participated in any activity in Spanish with NEHA. Being together with all of the other Spanish-speaking families made me feel like we were one big family and as if we had known each other forever. Having the opportunity to hear the stories of other families in our language is something extremely valuable. In the future, I hope we can have more sessions or events in Spanish throughout the year, especially activities to help celebrate our culture, like, possibly, cooking classes.
My family and I are very grateful to NEHA for always welcoming us with open arms and for always thinking of all of its members to educate them in a fun way.
